AMD just gave your old Radeon GPU a new lease on life

That last one’s particularly good to see, and it somehow manages to squeak in both ahead of official schedule yet way behind unofficial expectations.

Gamers were angry when AMD originally limited FSR 4 to its latest GPUs, especially given the company’s history of supporting open technologies across a wide range of hardware. Things got even more awkward after AMD accidentally leaked FSR 4’s source code and modders quickly coaxed it into running on older Radeon cards anyway. AMD eventually promised official RX 6000 support in early 2027.

Surprise! It’s here now.

AMD says it optimized the INT8 FSR 4.1 model created for Radeon RX 7000 GPUs to run on the older RDNA 2 architecture. RX 6000 owners can grab it today as part of the new Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver, gaining what AMD calls a “significant leap in image quality” over the older FSR 3.1 upscaler. Considering how much better FSR 4 looks than its predecessors, this is a big upgrade for your five- or six-year-old Radeon graphics card.

The expansion goes well beyond desktop GPUs. AMD created a more efficient FSR 4.1 model for Ryzen AI 9 laptop chips and select Ryzen Z2 processors used in gaming handhelds, while beefier Ryzen AI Max systems get support as well. Microsoft’s Xbox CTO also confirmed that FSR 4.1 is coming to Xbox Series X and S consoles “soon.”

More importantly, FSR 4.1’s newfound reach closes one of the biggest gaps with DLSS. Nvidia’s core DLSS Super Resolution works on every GeForce RTX graphics card ever released, stretching all the way back to 2018’s RTX 20-series, even though fancier features like Frame Generation remain tied to newer hardware.
