A free airflow tweak that can drop your CPU temp by a few degrees
In most mid-tower cases, cool air flows into the case from the front. Ideally, this should reach the CPU cooler. However, if the front top-fan is configured as an exhaust fan, it immediately draws some of this fresh air back upwards before it reaches the CPU cooler. This short-circuits the airflow.
Instead of flowing through the heat sink and fins, the cold air leaves the case virtually unused. The result is higher CPU temperatures, even though several fans are actively running. A simple fix is to configure the front-top fan as an intake rather than an exhaust, allowing more cool air to reach the CPU cooler before it exits the case.

This ensures that the fresh air drawn in from the front is directed towards the CPU, rather than being pulled out of the case prematurely. The rear-top fan remains configured as an exhaust, allowing the heated air to be expelled in a controlled manner. Although this combination of intake and exhaust airflow in the top panel contradicts older rules of thumb, in practice it often means a more even and efficient airflow around the processor.
It’s relatively easy to check whether this adjustment makes sense for your system. First, open the case and get an overview of the current fan orientation. Most fans have small arrows on the frame indicating the direction in which air flows. Alternatively, a piece of paper or smoke from an incense stick can help to visualize the direction of airflow.
Next, rotate the front top fan so that it blows air into the case, while the rear-top fan continues to expel air outwards. For a meaningful comparison, measure the temperatures before and after the change under similar conditions.
First, start Windows, let the system run for a few minutes to stabilize, and note the CPU temperature. Afterwards, perform a longer gaming test or a demanding application, as this provides a more representative test than a synthetic stress test. Monitor the average CPU temperature over several minutes.
