Apple Music price rise warning – MILLIONS ‘will have to pay more as fee hiked’

APPLE is reportedly hiking up the price of its Music service for student subscribers in the UK, US and Canada.

The Student plan is set to cost UK users £5.99 per month as opposed to £4.99.

US and Canada will see a similar increase, from $4.99 to $5.99.

While Apple is yet to confirm the price hike for UK users, students subscribed to Apple Music have started seeing the price increase on their iPhones and iPads’ subscription pages, according to 9to5Mac.

It’s unclear when Apple made these changes but reports suggest they could have been rolled out sometime between 21-23 June.

As of 2021, Apple Music has a total of 98 million users worldwide.

While it’s not certain how many of these are subscribers of the student plan, there are potentially millions of users affected by this price increase.

The news comes after the iPhone maker silently upped the price of its Studen plan last month in other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Israel, and Kenya.

The Apple Music individual plan, which costs £9.99 per month after a free trial, remains unchanged for now.

However, the price increase of the student plan of the service could spell a potential price increase for other users.

Although Apple has not confirmed this will be the case.

The family plan also still stands at the same price of £14.99 per month in the UK, including access to Apple Music for up to six users.

We have contacted Apple for comment regarding the news.

Last year, Apple upgraded the quality of all users’ music free of charge, converting all 75million Apple Music tracks into a “lossless” format while offering support for Dolby Audio too.

How to get an Apple Music student subscription

To be on an Apple Music student plan, users must tap ‘Student’ when signing up to the service, and then opt for ‘Verify Eligibility’.

You’ll then be taken to the UNiDAYS website, Apple explains, where you’ll need to follow the onscreen prompts to verify your identity and enrol

After UNiDAYS has verified that you’re a student, you’ll be redirected back to the Apple Music app or iTunes.

And once you’ve created your ID you’ll be able to take advantage of the cheaper subscription cost.
