Claude Fable 5.1 sometimes guesses rather than searches. Here’s the fix

In this context, “Let me check rather than guess” is Claude’s way of saying it’s about to kick off a web search rather than relying on its native memory, which has a cutoff date that can be weeks or even months old. Claude is being diligent about double-checking its facts rather than assuming.
In my recent tests, most consumer-grade ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini models are quite diligent about searching rather than assuming, with even the puny-but-ultra-fast Claude Haiku 4.5 pausing to search before sounding off on, say, Apple’s just-announced Mac mini models.
Surprisingly, Claude Fable 5.1—Anthropic’s most powerful new Claude model—does have a tendency to skip the searching and just guess, mainly when it’s set to low effort levels.
Word of that curious quirk comes directly from Anthropic itself, which notes in its Fable 5.1 prompting guide that when its reasoning effort is set to “low,” the model “is less likely than Claude Fable 5 to call a search or retrieval tool, and more likely to answer from memory.”
Anthropic’s first tip for making Fable 5.1 remember to search is to simply raise its effort level, keeping in mind that you can boost Fable’s effort setting for just a single conversational “turn” (and thus consume fewer AI tokens) rather than for the entire chat.
There’s another option, however: a “nudge toward verification,” which comes in the form of a Fable 5.1-specific system prompt:
