Donald Trump to be allowed back on Facebook & Instagram after two year ban – with his accounts to return ‘in weeks’

DONALD Trump is being allowed back on Facebook and Instagram after a two-year ban.

The former US president was booted off the social media platforms following the deadly Capitol Hill riot.

Social media giant Meta revealed his accounts will be reactivated “in the coming weeks”.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said: “In the event that Mr Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation.”

The company said it is adding new guardrails to ensure there are no repeat offenders who violate its rules.

Trump’s accounts were suspended on January 7, 2021 – a day after the insurrection at the US Capitol.

Shortly after being taken off Facebook, Trump slammed the decision as an “insult” to MAGA voters.

He said: “They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing, and ultimately, we will win.

“Our country can’t take this abuse anymore.”

It was the first time Meta, the world’s biggest social media company, had blocked the account of a sitting head of state for violating its content rules.

The company indefinitely revoked Trump’s access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts after removing two of his posts during the riot in January 2021.

One post included a video in which he reiterated his false claim of widespread voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election

Other social media companies also kicked Trump off their platforms, though he was recently reinstated on Twitter after Elon Musk took over the company.

Trump – who officially threw his name onto the ballot for the 2024 presidential election in November – has not tweeted since the ban was lifted.

After being removed from mainstream social media, Trump has been relying on his own, much smaller site, Truth Social.

He launched the platform after being blocked from Twitter.
