Google begins paying thousands of users refunds – and some are getting more than they expected
GOOGLE has started refunding users of its failed gaming gadget Stadia which closes down next year.
The tech giant has promised to give disappointed gamers their money back for certain purchases – but it seems some have received more than they expected.
Stadia was meant to be Google’s massive move into streamed gaming when it launched back in November 2019.
All users needed was a Chromecast plugged into their TV and a Stadia controller which cost about £90.
Google reportedly spent millions getting big name titles onboard.
But it never really took off and players complained of connection issues.
The firm announced it was giving up on the idea in September and said it would issue refunds for purchased kit as it would become useless once all is closed down on January 18, 2023.
Google told gamers they would give money back for any Stadia hardware purchased through the Google Store, including Stadia Controller, Founder’s Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages.
They also said refunds would be given out for any games and add-on purchases through the Stadia Store.
However, gamers were warned they would not get a refund for their monthly Stadia Pro subscription which was needed to access the service.
Despite this, some users have reported that they’ve received a bonus refund for their subscription anyway.
One users on Reddit showed a screenshot showing his £8.99 monthly subscription cost returned over nine months, totalling more than £80.
“This follows the emails I have received yesterday about cancelling my Pro subscription, and is in contradiction with the official press release saying that Pro sub won’t be refunded,” the Stadia gamer from the UK said.
Another added: “I am in UK, I got the same emails yesterday as well, received the Pro Subscription refunds this morning.”
But not everyone has been so lucky.
“In UK, I’ve been refunded for 2 of 4 games purchased ( the 2 first games I purchased, which they emailed me about 5 days ago), no hardware or pro sub refunds yet,” a third commented.
According to 9to5Google, the extra refunds were an error.
But the report claims lucky users who got more than expected won’t be asked to return the money.
