The eerie Easter egg is perfect for fans of hit TV show (and originally video game) The Last of Us.

If you go to Google and search for the phrase, you’ll notice something different.

At the bottom of the page, a small red icon with a mushroom on will appear.

If you tap on it, a creepy fungus will spread across the screen.

Keep tapping it to fill the display with more and more of the fungus.

It’s supposed to by Cordyceps, a real-world fungi that has been co-opted by The Last of Us franchise.

The TLOU universe, a fungal infection leads to a global pandemic.

The game and series follow characters navigating a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by the Cordyceps fungus.

Humans infected with the fungus are transformed into aggressive creatures.

And Google’s new Easter egg pays homage to that.

It works on both mobile and desktop, so you can watch in horror as the fungus takes over on any device.

The Last of Us video game released in 2013 to widespread critical acclaim.

Its compelling story, impressive visuals and satisfying gameplay helped the game sell millions of units.

The TV series – which premiered on January 15, 2023 – stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, and follows a very similar narrative. It has already received significant critical praise.

Episode 9, which will be the series one finale, is due to air on HBO Max on March 12, 2023.
