iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: at a glance

Similarities:

As we expect Apple devices in the same series share many features, so the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro do have key similarities, while the iPhone 13 Pro gets some Pro perks.

Both devices come with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, True Tone, and Haptic Touch, as well as sharing the same A15 Bionic chip.

The notch which houses the front-facing camera and speaker on the devices is also 20% smaller compared to the previous iPhone 12 series.

You will also find both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro come with a Ceramic Shield glass front and IP68 dust and water resistance up to a depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes.

As is the case with all the latest Apple releases, both devices are compatible with MagSafe accessories and wireless chargers.

Differences:

These two handsets may look similar, but there are some key differences that come down to the iPhone 13 Pro gaining features unique to the premium device.

To begin, the iPhone 13 Pro uses a Surgical-grade stainless steel design, compared to the iPhone 13 which uses Aerospace-grade aluminium.

You will also get an extra 2GB of memory on the Pro model, with the iPhone 13 coming with 4GB compared to the iPhone 13 Pro with 6GB of memory.

As you would expect, the main difference between the base iPhone 13 model and its Pro counterpart is in the camera.

Not only does the iPhone 13 Pro come with better optical and digital zoom but it gains a 2.8 Telephoto camera lens that isn’t found on the base model.

The iPhone 13 Pro also comes with the new Apple ProRAW and Night mode portraits, as well as up to 4K ProRes video recording – all of which are only found on the Pro handset.

We are impressed with the upgrades and extra features on the iPhone 13 Pro, but unless you really want to push the Pro camera to its limits, the average user will get on just as well with the base iPhone 13 model.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: Camera

All of the iPhone 13 series came with spec improvements, and the cameras got some key upgrades from the previous iPhone 12 series.

Compared to its predecessor the iPhone 13 comes with a new sensor in its 12MP main camera letting in 47% more light, and it is now set up in a diagonal line instead of the vertical configuration seen on the iPhone 11 and 12.

The iPhone 13 does have its own unique upgrades that you won’t find on its sibling the iPhone 13 – but they are great if you want top photography specs on your everyday device.

To start you’ll gain the Apple ProRAW for photo editing, ProRes for 4K video recording, and a LiDAR Scanner for better Night mode portraits.

That being said, those features are not important to the majority and the Duel 12MP camera on the iPhone 13 is a step up from the iPhone 12 series and is leagues above any older models you may be upgrading from.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: Design

In terms of design, Apple hasn’t made any more drastic changes as it did when we see the iPhone 12 release – we still have the new squared edge design which you’ll either love or loathe, but both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro have a premium feel.

But the iPhone 13 does come with some welcomed changes, like a smaller notch for extra screen space, in fact, it’s been reduced by 20% across the lineup.

The rear camera also has a slightly new look, with the Duel camera on the iPhone 13 now set up diagonally rather than vertically as we’ve seen on the iPhone 11 and 12.

Other than these small changes, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are very similar to their predecessors, with the camera on the Pro being significantly larger than on the base models.

Of course, these design factors are not critical to the phone itself and comes down to your preferences when buying.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: Features

When it comes to features, it comes down to your preferences and what you need your phone to do – there are great features on both, but the iPhone 13 Pro goes all out on storage and its camera.

If you are someone who is big on photography and needs plenty of storage and processing power then the iPhone 13 Pro really shines, while the base model has some great options for the everyday user.

After making its debut on the iPhone 12 Pro Apple’s ProRAW is again only featured on the Pro handset. The new technology keeps a RAW file format which allows you to get more creative during the editing process.

But that is not to say the base model is something to pass by, it still comes with an incredible Duel camera with the same 12MP Ultra Wide and Wide camera as the iPhone 13 Pro.

The iPhone 13 also comes with an option to preset all your shots in a specific portrait mode like Vivid Cool or Dramatic – which saves editing time.

We always advise that you should consider whether these extra camera features are something you will make use of, as the premium cost of the device is down to these extra perks, which the average user could save by opting for the base model.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: Battery

While the battery life on the iPhone 13 series will vary across the range, all of the devices in the series got a boost compared to the previous iPhone 12 range.

In terms of size, the iPhone 13 comes with a 3,227 mAh battery while the iPhone 13 Pro comes with a 3,095 mAh battery – but the iPhone 13 Pro does have an edge over the base model.

Apple is notoriously cagey about the battery life of its devices, but the iPhone 13 comes with around 19 hours of battery compares to 22 hours on the iPhone 13 Pro.

Video playback on the Pro model can stretch an extra three hours compared to the iPhone 13, while video streaming on the Pro survived an extra five hours.

So the iPhone 13 Pro has the edge over the iPhone 13, so it may be worth considering if you need a device that you can push to the max before you need to recharge.

However, it will depend on your own use and these benchmark figures will be different from person to person, but both devices do support MagSafe and Qi wireless charging so you have more options to charge than ever.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 13 Pro: Price

When the iPhone 13 series hit the shelves the base model entered the market at £779 with 128GB of storage, while the same storage on the iPhone 13 Pro came at a premium of £949.

While you can pick up the older generations for less, the iPhone 13 is the more affordable of the two and £350 cheaper.

Since the release of the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has phased out the iPhone 13 Pro device, so while you can pick up deals on the iPhone 13 it is more difficult to find on the iPhone 13 Pro.

If you are looking to pick up a pay-monthly plan you can pick up the iPhone 13 on O2 with 250GB data for £38 per month, while the iPhone 13 Pro is available on Sky Mobile with 75GB of data for £67 per month.
