What is the Meta Quest 3?
The Meta Quest 3 is the next entry in Mark Zuckerberg’s line of virtual reality headsets.
It follows the Meta Quest 2, which was originally launched as the Oculus Quest 2 by Facebook (now Meta). Confusing? Yes.
Anyway, the Meta Quest 3 has already been confirmed by Meta, but it’s not out just yet.
The standard Meta Quest line is supposed to be a more budget-friendly VR headset.
For instance, the Meta Quest 2 currently costs $399/£399.
That’s in contrast to the more premium Meta Quest Pro, which comes in at $1,499/£1,499.
Meta says it has to keep developing the regular Quest and the Quest Pro as separate lines.
One is built for a “games console” price range and mass adoption, while the other is a more premium option for geeks, rich people and businesses.
So expect to see improvements on the Quest 3, but with specs still below the more powerful Quest Pro.
Details on the headset are light, but it’s rumoured that the Quest 3 might get “mixed reality” features.
For instance, the Quest Pro has full-colour passthrough using cameras that let you see the real world around you.
The Quest 3 could potentially borrow that trick.
But it’s likely to miss out on the face- and eye-tracking tech built into the Meta Quest Pro.
Meta Quest 3 release date – when is it out?
Meta has already confirmed that a new headset is on the way.
In an earnings report, Meta said we’ll see “the launch of our next generation of our consumer Quest headset later next year”.
That suggests that it won’t come out in the first half of 2023, although nothing is certain.
For contrast, the Meta Quest 2 was unveiled on September 16, 2020 – and then released on October 13.
So Meta could go for a similar timeframe with its Meta Quest 3.
That would get it out onto store shelves just in time for Christmas 2023.
Meta Quest 3 price – how much will it cost?
There’s no guarantee for exactly how much the Meta Quest 3 will cost.
The Meta Quest 2 originally launched at $299/£299, but that price was actually increased earlier this year – to $399/£399.
Mark Zuckerberg has previously said that he wants the consumer Quest headset to fall around the price of a games console – like an Xbox or PlayStation.
And he said he would like it to be priced around “$300, $400, $500 – that zone”.
So while the Meta Quest 3 doesn’t have exact pricing, expect it to fall somewhere in that region.
A repeat of the Meta Quest 2’s current pricing looks most likely.
