But it isn’t a perfect implementation. To move the Windows 11 taskbar, you have to go to Windows Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Taskbar behavior → Taskbar position. There you must choose between “Left,” “Top,” “Right,” and “Bottom.” There’s a distinct lack of convenient drag-and-drop using the mouse as there was in Windows 10.

Microsoft has no plans to change this. “This is a deliberate design choice and not a missing feature,” explains Diego Baca, Vice President of Design at Microsoft, in a social media post.

The Microsoft manager’s reasoning:

From our research, dragging the taskbar to reposition it can lead to accidental movements, which is one of the reasons “Lock the taskbar” existed in previous versions of Windows. We also found that changing the taskbar position isn’t something people do frequently.

We felt that providing a discoverable setting, just one right-click away, was a more intentional and predictable experience. It’s a deliberate design decision, not a missing capability.

So if you were hoping that the Windows 11 taskbar would eventually get drag-and-drop repositioning, don’t hold your breath. It’s possible Microsoft may change its mind in the future—like it did with the taskbar being repositionable at all—but it doesn’t seem likely any time soon.
