As per the new rules which came into force in September 2022, online application for Police Clearance Certificate will be available. Citizens can apply online through Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). Earlier, while making a statement about this, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that there has been a steady increase in the demand for Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) for making passports for the past few months. In such a situation, the option of passport verification has been made available through online Post Office Passport Seva Kendra. This is where the police clearance process is mandatory, as the applicant’s criminal record, if any, needs to be checked before they are granted a passport.
