Plex hack – all users told to change passwords TODAY as streaming app ‘breached’

STREAMING app Plex has warned all users over a “potential data breach” – and is enforcing mass password resets from today.

If you’re a Plex user, you need to log on and choose a new password as soon as possible.

Plex is a popular streaming app for TVs and other devices that lets you watch your own content.

It’s like a personal Netflix that you create using TV shows, movies or other media that you’ve downloaded – as well as offering some of its own content.

This morning Plex began warning all users that their data may have been accessed by an unknown “third party”.

This included email addresses, usernames and encrypted passwords.

In an email seen by The Sun, Plex said: “Yesterday, we discovered suspicious activity on one of our databases.

“We immediately began an investigation and it does appear that a third-party was able to access a limited subset of data.”

Plex says it has now closed the hole used by the mystery intruder to access its systems.

And it says it’s reviewing all cybersecurity across the app.

Now Plex is forcing all users to change their passwords to continue using the app.

This means all of your logins will be signed out.

“Even though all account passwords that could have been accessed were hashed and secured in accordance with best practices, out of an abundance of caution we are requiring all Plex accounts to have their password reset,” Plex explained.

“Rest assured that credit card and other payment data are not stored on our servers at all and were not vulnerable in this incident.”

Plex is reminding users not to share their passwords or credit card numbers over email.

And it recommends all users turning on two-factor authentication, so your login can be verified with an SMS code.

“We sincerely apologize to you for any inconvenience this situation may cause,” the company said in a statement.

“We are doing everything we can to swiftly remedy this incident and prevent future incidents from occurring.”
