A woman in Delhi recently had such an experience. A similar deception happened with her. She was so scared of falling into the web of scammers that she began to worry about her safety and privacy. The whole scam started with a link sent to her by a scammer.
Actually this woman had booked a train ticket, but due to some reasons she canceled it. After canceling the ticket, the refund amount in her account was showing zero. In such a situation she decided to speak to customer care. For this, the woman searched for Ticket Cancellation Refund (Ticket Cancellation Refund) on Google. She found a customer care number at the top of the search results, which actually belonged to a scammer.
The woman was seeing this number at the top of the IRCTC website. It was only when she called this number that the fraud occurred and she lost lakhs of rupees.
How did the fraud happen?
The woman said that the caller was so convincing in conversation that she never once suspected a scam. The scammer sent her a link and asked her to report it. This time when she questioned about the link, the caller said that it is not even asking for OTP. By doing this, the scammer confused the woman and planted suspicious apps in her phone. With the help of this app, he gained complete control over the woman’s phone. According to the victim, the scammer was able to access her photos and other details.
To engage them in his talk, he (the scanner) would share train-related information at intervals, which was actually already in the woman’s phone. After this, the fraudster made transactions from the woman’s account through Net Banking login. First he linked Payee to himself and then made a transaction of 3 lakhs. After this, the fraudster also took a personal loan of Rs 2.96 lakh in the woman’s name. By then, the woman came to know about the cheating on her and started complaining about it.
The woman first called the bank and blocked her account, but by then the scammer had made a total transaction of Rs 5 lakh. After first withdrawing Rs 3 lakh from the savings account, he transferred Rs 2 lakh from the woman’s credit card. Fortunately he could not transfer the loan amount.
What problems had to be faced?
After blocking everything the lady called 1930. Police said that her current location is Haryana and she is a resident of Delhi NCR, so she has to file a complaint in Delhi. As she was on a train at the time of this scam, she lodged a complaint with Kamala Market Cyber Cell as soon as she reached Delhi. After that she also had to file a complaint at the police station in Noida. Not only this, he has also tweeted about this entire matter. The victim said the police came to her house three times to take her statement and question her about the investigation, but she has no word on when she will get her money.
This money was in her salary account and that was her savings. She also had other accounts, but only a small amount in them. With all the money gone, she is also struggling to meet her daily expenses.
How does a customer care scam happen?
Most of the victims of this type of scam look for customer care numbers online. Scammers keep their number registered online in a number of ways. Fake websites are also created for this purpose. As soon as the user falls into their trap, the scammers start their game. Earlier, scammers used to ask for OTP for transactions, but in recent times, they have changed the entire method of scamming. First they send the link and then implant the app in the user’s phone. With the help of this they get all the details of the user. They also get access to your phone. After this they don’t need to ask you for OTP.
How does fraud happen without money?
In fact, many times we think that we don’t have money in our account, so what is the harm if we are cheated? It should be understood that even if you don’t have money in your account, users can transfer money by taking a loan in your name. Not only this, money can also be transferred from your credit card. In such a case, even if there is no money in the account, fraudsters can cheat you.
