Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (Nirmala Sitaranman) informed on this issue in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He said the government is keeping an eye on allegations of tax evasion against three Chinese companies. He said that notices have been sent to Oppo, Vivo India and Xiaomi in this case, so now the problems of the companies in this case are likely to increase. The government is now on action mode against these companies.

Notices issued to companies

DRI (Department of Revenue Intelligence) has issued a notice of Rs 4,389 crore to mobile maker Oppo. This notice is issued due to underpayment of customs duty due to misdeclaration. Finance Minister said we believe tax evasion is around Rs 2981 crore.’

Less amount deposited

In terms of payment of customs duty on imported goods, we have found evasion of Rs 1,408 crore. Sitharaman has also given this information about Xiaomi. Xiaomi deals in Redmi, Poco and MI (now Xiaomi) brand phones in India. He said Xiaomi has a duty liability of around Rs 653 crore. Instead of three notices, they have deposited only Rs 46 lakh.

Vivo’s number is also in the same list

Vivo is the third name in this list. A demand notice of Rs 2217 crore has also been issued to Vivo. The company has kept a voluntary deposit of Rs.60 crores. The finance minister said that apart from this the ED is also probing 18 other companies, the same group formed by Vivo.

A burst of action on Oppo too

In the case of Oppo, the Union Finance Ministry had said that the DRI had conducted inspections and raids at the offices of Oppo and the residences of some key management officers. During the investigation, the agency found that Oppo India did not provide proper information regarding the import of certain items of mobile product. Based on this, the company has taken duty exemption of Rs 2981 crore.
